Iran sentences 3 to death over election protests

An Iranian court has sentenced three people to death over street unrest that erupted after Iran's disputed election in June claiming they had had made "extensive confessions" during the trial. Reformist politicians have condemned the court sessions as "show trials."

 

Analysts see the mass trials as an attempt by the authorities to uproot the moderate opposition.

In the face of this trend, the efforts of western governments or of U.S. President Barack Obama to talk, charm, or sanction Iran into more moderate behaviour are hopeless.
