It Came From Within

It's been 70 years since Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, the massive pogrom unleashed against Jews in Germany and Austria in 1938.

 

Israel’s Chief Rabbis have asked that Jews in Israel and around the world “light candles and leave lights on in synagogues this Sunday night to remember and remind future generations never to forget the cruelty and evil actions that befell us.

 

To mark the 70th anniversarry of this tragic event, Yad Vashem has created a special  online exhibition. It Came From Within provides an informative and experiential context to the events surrounding Kristallnacht.

Jewish, Nazi objects found in dump near Berlin

Jewish objects from pre-World War II German Jewish homes, were found in a dump near Berlin, where the Nazis buried rejected loot from the the 1938 pogrom known as Kristallnacht, or "The Night of Broken Glass."

 

Items like a Passover ceremony bowl buried next to a Nazi swastika demand further excavation to shed light on these findings.

Auschwitz survivor comes of age

A Bar Mitzvah is a great milestone for Jewish boys and traditionally held around their 13th birthday. But for Arieh Czeislah there could be no ceremony as he was deported to Auschwitz. Now, age 79, he will finally mark the passage to adulthood.

Holocaust Mashup

How can one understand the true horror of the Holocaust? 6,000,000 murders is a number nobody can really grasp. 600,000 or 6,000 or 600 or even 60 are just numbers. 

Here is an attempt to use mashup technologies to gain some understanding of the true meaning of the Holocaust:

1. Run a query on  The Central Database of Shoah Victims' Names. I  used the following search criteria:
   1. Born exactly 70 years ago (1938)
   2. Children who died when they were 4 years old (in 1942)
   3. Auschwitz as the place of death
2. The query returned more than 500 dead children.
3. Run a script to select 10 children, each from a different country. 
4. Map the 10 murdered children on a Google Map, along with their Page of Testimony.
5. Add a YouTube movie about Auschwitz to the map.

The chilling result can be seen below. You can click on each marker to view  short description along with a thumbnail of their Page of Testimony. Click on the thumbnail to view a scanned copy of the testimony given about each child by a surviving relative.
