Holocaust Mashup
How can one understand the true horror of the Holocaust? 6,000,000 murders is a number nobody can really grasp. 600,000 or 6,000 or 600 or even 60 are just numbers.
Here is an attempt to use mashup technologies to gain some understanding of the true meaning of the Holocaust:
- Run a query on The Central Database of Shoah Victims' Names. I used the following search criteria:
- Born exactly 70 years ago (1938)
- Children who died when they were 4 years old (in 1942)
- Auschwitz as the place of death
- The query returned more than 500 dead children.
- Run a script to select 10 children, each from a different country.
- Map the 10 murdered children on a Google Map, along with their Page of Testimony.
- Add a YouTube movie about Auschwitz to the map.
The chilling result can be seen below. You can click on each marker to view short description along with a thumbnail of their Page of Testimony. Click on the thumbnail to view a scanned copy of the testimony given about each child by a surviving relative.
This is a wonderful tool. Great work.
